In response to the complaints regarding my Surrey post yesterday, I refer you to the front page headline of the July 11th Surrey Leader paper -Do you feel unsafe after dark? The survey was conducted for the Surrey RCMP by the criminology dept. at Kwantlen in 2006, and percentages vary between 64% and 79%, depending on the area surveyed. It echoes the sentiment of my post, reflecting the actual feelings of the community residents, rather than those voiced by city hall. Surrey residents, for the most part, are not living in a safe community, one where you can walk and play without constant wariness. That being said, it depends on who you ask. In my experience, those born, raised and still living in Surrey don’t always seem to notice how bad and different it is . Those who relocated to Surrey for cheaper real estate do. Whether you agree with me or not, it’s clear that something needs to change when the majority of residents in a community feel very unsafe after dark, fearful to venture out of their home or neighbourhood.
I’m Laila Yuile, and this is how I see it.
