I was the only person at the polls today with kids. Most people hate taking little kids anywhere, but my four year old knows all about politics – or so he thinks.
For example: He told me the other day that he thinks ” Gordon Campbell should just get off B.C.” I asked him why he thought that and he just looked at me with a bit of an attitude and said: ” Come on mom, you know he can’t do anything right!”
Politics is part of daily conversation in our home, and as four year olds tend to do, he listens to everything that comes out of my mouth, and he’s obviously picked up on my political leanings. Although, no matter what I say he still thinks Gordon Campbell makes great soup.
I’ve always explained to my kids the reasons behind my thoughts and beliefs and why I hold them dear, but as they get older I urge them to explore their own. However, something I believe should start with parents is ensuring that children are aware of how lucky they are to live in a democracy( ok, ok, lets not crush that idea yet) and how important it is to exercise the freedoms and rights we are entitled to.
That’s why I took my children to vote tonight, and why I urge you to take yours while they are young enough to find it interesting and exciting.

When do you plan to tell them the truth?
Tomorrow? ; )
Hey Laila – thanks for contributing so much to the live blog.
How’s ’bout next time you do the hosting?
.
You’re on Rossk. And thank you for having me. It was quite rousing at times, no? And nice to spend the evening with like minds. Except for ‘James’.
Kids should be kids having fun, exploring the world, playing around. I think 4 years old is a little young to be indoctrinated in any political stripe, religion or other brainwashing.
Gee, I wondered how long it would take you to show up. Thanks for the parenting tip. I’ll get right on that.
Might want to pass it on to your buddy Gordon before he parades those grandbabies around anymore than he already has. By your reasoning, they should be drooling on a biscuit somewhere, rather than being dragged out for all the press to see what a doting grampa he is.
The same thought applies across the board. Leave the kids out of the BS. Its no different than taking the kiddies to a big rally and have them recite lines for the media because mummy or daddy say so, not because they are up to speed on nuclear energy issues for example. Nothing wrong with drooling on a biscuit if it makes them happy.
And once again I am not Gordo’s buddy. If you must know I voted for the independent candidate in my area, the person who I considered the best to represent my interests.
“… I voted for the independent candidate in my area”
You’re fortunate to have had the option. In our constituency it was the Three Stooges or no-one.
Perhaps that is why the turnout was only 52% or so. “None of the above” takes the popular vote.
