BC Government denies cancelling gifts for kids in care

A joint effort today, proving that when the going gets tough… the bloggers get going!  It started with a really pointed post at The Gazetteer, picked up over with the  indomitable Ian Reids, continued with a new tip and email here on my site and was carried on over at Norm’s….

And the Ministry of Children and Families denies everything, which is a good thing because we wouldn’t want any kids at risk, anywhere, to go without a little something.

Right?

My latest post for Huffington Post BC :

B.C. Government Denies Cancelling Christmas Gifts For Kids In Care

  1. It is important to note, that the ministry did not answer RossK’s question #1 from his original post :

“Question #1: Have social workers in the MCFD been told they are not allowed to purchase Christmas gifts for the children and youth in government care? ”

Their reply to my query :

“Any claim that the ministry will not be supplying Christmas gifts for children in care is absolutely inaccurate and it is very concerning that this erroneous message was sent to a client. In fact, social workers are encouraged to ensure every child and youth in care receives gifts during the holiday season.

Funding to cover gifts for children and youth in care is built-in to monthly payments the ministry sends to foster parents. For children and youth living independently or on Youth Agreements, ministry staff are authorized and encouraged to ensure those young people are remembered over the holidays and gifts are provided.”

I believe he is going to do a follow up post on that for tomorrow.

There are more questions unravelling as we look through this.

  2. UNDENIABLE PROOF! Minister of Children and Family Development and the Premier have no conscience as evident by their actions and in contradiction to their image makers. They come from a higher realm than the rest of us, and it will not result in good will to be questioning their actions or purpose in life.
WARNING: Be seated when reading the following, have no hot liquids near your body, and do not have any foodstuff’s in your mouth.

  3. The ministries statement is full of weasel words, and they are scurrying like weasels today over this story.Your friends source is right on the money but they didnt put that no gift directive into writing to make sure it couldnt come back at them, and it didnt go province wide either.I doubt Clark knew anything about this or Cadieux, regardless some mid or high level bureaucrat without a care has some explaining to do.

  4. The Government’s response reminds me of a Fire Drill we used to run when at a stop sign, by jumping out and running around the car. Total chaos. As Lalonde has pointed out many times this whole Ministry has been run by a string of incompetent Ministers. Not unqualified Ministers, but ‘Incompetent Ministers’.

The best point I’ve seen, as mentioned yesterday, and brought up by another commentor, is the Ministry’s statement about monies already included, for Christmas, in the monthly funds. Which the commentor correctly brought out the fact that meant no presents as there were no additions to the monthly funds. Oop’s, I think the author of the Ministry’s statement outsmarted themselves.

It’s also worth mentioning how the young, newly elected Minister has quickly followed into step for her superiors. Obviously, she is not in charge of her Ministry, by the comments responding to a question at her constituency office, made in an earlier post.

These people should be hanging their heads in shame. Using these children as pawns. Denying the inefficiency’s of the Ministry. Putting the front line workers in a hopeless frustrating situation. Not acting on recommendations that were made years ago. That shame rests on the shoulders of each Minister that has been in charge of this Ministry. Their greatest contribution has been to deny, make excuses, make false statements of action. There has been no action, None. Shame on all of them.

  8. Laila, you had a few excellent articles about ministry waste ( Ministry staff purchasing chocolates, bottles of wine etc on the public dime). If you could send these to me I would appreciate it. Thank you. Blake.
