Last year during the Talk Show Idol Contest, I had the privilege of meeting some extraordinary people from all walks of life. Looking back at my topics and guests, I see a theme now – it wasn’t intentional – but the majority of guests had a common denominator. None feared standing apart from the crowd. Some had overcome great adversity and were shining examples of the human spirit, others had worked hard to achieve great and supposedly “undo-able ” goals, and some simply enjoyed life on their own terms, doing what they loved, unbothered by those who thought they were too outspoken or downright strange.
The guys from H2V, who cycled across Canada non-stop, have a blog I read daily, and yesterdays post really hit home for me. You can read it here: http://www.swimupstreamlife.com/2008/02/dont-fear-standing-tall.html
It’s not easy to go your own way and stand apart from the crowd. It takes guts to stand tall , be true to your beliefs and thoughts, and follow your passion. People want to drag you down. Some are jealous , some resent you for your conviction to stand true, and you do become a large target. Matt has really summed it up well, and he lives what he writes.
I’m opinionated. I’m not afraid of discussion, of upsetting the status quo, of tackling things that make many people uncomfortable. Why are so many afraid to speak their minds? Why do so many meekly follow along with the rest of the herd, and never follow what they know is the right path? Fearwill get the best of you everytime. I’m not perfect- far from it, in fact, but I’m not trying to be something I’m not.
I’m the friend who is going to tell you what you need to hear when no one else will tell you. Sugarcoating makes me gag, frankly. If that’s what you want, you aren’t going to find it here – Go buy a lollipop. I’m not going to smile to your face and fake niceness when really, I cant stand you -I’m just not going to have anything to do with you.I wont be rude, but I’m certainly not going to be having drinks with you either. I made the decision to surround myself with people who are like-minded and supportive, and thats not always easy. You cant change others, but you can change the way you deal with them -and sometimes that means letting them go.
I live my life with passion, and integrity. If it takes me a little longer to get to the final destination, so be it- I’ll have the pleasure of knowing I did it the way that was important to me. Nothing worth having comes easy.
