“Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.” ~Ada Louise Huxtable

Yes it does only take a few of these kind of days to become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world…  but for me, it only took one – yesterday!

And like the glowy buzz from late afternoon cocktails in the hazy heat of summer, this delusion the world is alright will  also eventually wear off and reality will creep upon us again, but for now…

Life is too short to spend this holiday weekend doing anything other than spending time with my two youngest children, because the older two(who are now young adults) are busy doing what young men and women do in summer… making summer memories as only the young among us can. Ah, to be young again… hot summer nights, bare feet in grass, sea spray tousled hair and the smell of coconut laden Hawaiian Tropic dark tanning oil ; )

So go, now. Get off your computer. Dip your toes in the ocean, get sand in your shorts, dance, drink pink wine…and if you have a chance, blow bubbles out your car window while waiting at stoplights – take it from me, the last one will have everyone around you laughing and smiling ; )

Happy BC Day to all of my readers, old and new, my friends and fellow writers.

Together, we will make a difference. We already are.

  1. Thank you .

Out we go with the new bubble blowing toy lawn mower.
It might be a good weekend to ‘gasp’ remove some training wheels.

  2. “Ah, to be young again” But youth is relative isn’t it. To me, Laila, you are still in the summer of life where wisdom emerges from knowledge and experience. Caution though: don’t neglect your habits.

Remember Mark Twain telling of a doctor at the bedside of a very sick, elderly lady. The doctor told her that she must stop drinking, cussing and smoking. The lady said that she’d never done any of those things in her entire life. The doctor responded, “Well, that’s your problem, then. You’ve neglected your habits.”

Twain added: “She was like a sinking ship with no freight to throw overboard.”

Actually, despite wear and tear, creaks and groans and parts that work differently, growing older ain’t so bad. As a post pubescent senior, I enjoy the breadth of experiences and friendships created over many years. I enjoy the warmth, comfort and trust of a long term relationship that now allows precise communication without spoken words. I appreciate having had babies grown into admirable adults. I love the faces of happy toddlers lighting up at the appearance of grandma and grandpa.

  3. I for one took your sage advice Laila, and sojourned on my bicycle down to city park here in the almost indescribably beautiful city of Kelowna.

Even when devoid of human souls, the city waterfront park is stunningly beautiful with endless varieties of native and exotic flowers and trees.

    But today was special.

I guess there were some twenty thousand people spread out from the boardwalk to the Bennett bridge. Predominantly young adults but a smattering of grandparents and toddlers shreiking excitedly from the water park.

The beaches were full of sun worshippers and swimmers and lookers on and the lake was overflowing with all manner of watercraft making navigation a test of courage.

Today was a great day to be there and be alive to enjoy it all.

Now if only I believed in reincarnation.

  4. Oh no!!! Now I am really upset. Please send some of the sunshine to the northern parts. We are drowning in rain drops. i am thinking of borrowing some sheep or goats, to eat my lawn grass, it must be a foot high. Is the sun still a yellow ball in the sky? I forget. I am sure, someone has seeded the clouds.

Oh well, maybe the sun will shine tomorrow. My little granddaughter, wants me to come out to their little farm, to play with her and her puppy Ace.

  6. I thought maybe this was going to be about skinny dipping which is a great way to shed clothes in the summer, but tension maybe not so much depending whether you have climbed over the fence to the public pool or are just in your own backyard…

  7. and that is why I am passionate about protecting places we can go to ……where we can really can shed “the delusion that the world is alright”…..it worked for me for the last couple of weeks in one of our most pristine local fjords……my wish is that those who are making the poor decisions governing us will go to those places and acheive balance…….a big word for sure……. but do-able
