“When the blackberries hang
swollen in the woods, in the brambles
nobody owns, I spendall day among the high
branches, reaching
my ripped arms, thinkingof nothing, cramming
the black honey of summer
into my mouth; all day my bodyaccepts what it is. In the dark
creeks that run by there is
this thick paw of my life darting amongthe black bells, the leaves; there is
this happy tongue.”
– Mary Oliver, August
Summer beckons me again and indeed my tongue is happy this time of year. Have you any recipes for blackberry wine…?
There are far too many photos from the peaks of Whistler to post here, so please, if you like, I invite you to enjoy them at this link. And try as I might to get away from politics, the politics found me – at the Bare Naked Ladies concert. Details at this photo gallery:
What really irks me about the extreme right wing zealots is their ‘in your face’ attitude. And the fact that the BC Liberals have the nerve to call themselves ‘liberals’ makes me want to lose my lunch.
Lovely pics of the Whistler area, BTW. I especially liked the one of the black bear. Nice to see they haven’t all ben shot.

Yep, that was a totally inappropriate venue for talking about the HST, especially by telling people to stop their bitching when they have to pay it. I think she may have worked for “Whistler presents”, but her whole attitude was to be grateful for what the HST has given Whistler, and if that is the case, the rest of BC should know where that money is going. Not sure I agree with so much money being spent in Whistler, since a vast majority of workers that fill the jobs in that resort are foreign, with a very high ratio of Aussies and English. In fact, I asked a lift worker if any Canadians worked at the resort at all, and she pointed to the one guy she knew was a local. So, the BC government is handing out all this money to a resort town to assist in increasing revenues, attracting tourists and keeping valuable jobs …. yet most of the workers are from overseas..lol.
Anyways, wish I had a video of the Booing that ensued when she made that comment. She managed to turn a happy, excited crowd into an angry one with that in your face ” stop bitching about the HST” speech.

But of course, the Barenaked Ladies can turn any booing crowd into a cheering one. I love those guys so much!

I spent my break at work the other night picking and eating blackberries.
What a relaxing and yummy time.
I saw the Barenaked Ladies at the PNE many years ago when they were walk around entertainers. (pre If I Had A Million Dollars and with Steven) Very cool.

mm, sounds nice, my daughter does the same on her break! Nothing, absolutely nothing is better than a sun warmed blackberry exploding in your mouth…
If I had a million dollars…. I would invest wisely and create the best new media based on truth Canada has ever seen. And I would ask BNL to play a theme song..lol.. since their comments at the concert were quite sharp and pointed at the politics of BC at times!

Laila, I can’t wait for your post about the HST victory to comment and say “wheeeeeeeeee!” and also a big congratulations to you for all the hard work you did to spread the word for the YES side. I think this might be the first time I have voted for something that has won and it feels pretty great!
