I haven’t blogged much about the federal election because quite frankly, unless you are a political nut like so many of us are, the reality is that not many people pay attention until right before they vote… and far more Canadians do not pay attention at all… as evidenced by the number of registered voters who did not even bother to vote…. https://lailayuile.com/2015/08/11/the-only-way-to-change-it-is-to-vote-people-are-responsible-paul-wellstone/

Wow. I know that might be a reality check for a lot of you, but this IS the reality of many Canadians very absorbed in making ends meet, going to school, picking kids up from daycare, trying to get by on pensions, etc. etc.

But this election has been hijacked by some power-hungry strategists and brokers who have a lot on the line. And you know what? Their issues- while contentious-really have no bearing on the everyday lives of the majority of Canadians. Seriously.
And Rick Mercer gets that. In less time than it takes me to think about a blog post headline, he reminds Canadians what this election is all about.

Over the next week, culminating in an inspiring post on Friday, I’ll have a number of posts on the issues of Election 2015 for you, along with a look at some red herrings and a trip down memory lane of our current governments record.

  2. I never thought I would say I’m disappointed in Canada. In fact I’m more than disappointed, I’m disgusted. We’ve trashed our environmental protection, rid ourselves of scientists, allowed our country to be hijacked by corporations and laid off thousands from good manufacturing jobs, allowed corporations to hide billions offshore while interfering with CRA from finding out where and who hid the money and the list goes on and on.

    This just didn’t start with Harper it started with the Liberals under Cretien and long before. For over 150 years we have been controlled by right wing governments and for the most part by a political party, faux “liberal” party, that have raped the treasury for friends and accomplices profit while the middle class has been stripped of money and benefits.

    And to add insult to injury they’re thinking of reducing CPP payments and OAS. This is the money that is paid by Canadian for Canadians to enjoy in their retirement. It’s not the governments money or for the board of directors to give to friends for risky investments, it’s your’s and mine. This is disgusting!

  3. This is our election. For many and I count myself in. This is the first time in my adult life I don’t know who I will support. And that prospect is frightening. The universal dumbing down of important issues, the incredibly nasty advertising, and the pool of familiar faces to choose from that bring nothing new to the discussion. And in most cases, don’t discuss anything at all except carefully mined issues of the day that are more convenient than substantial.
    But here is the catch, people matter more than parties if you believe that most of the people will do the right thing most of the time given the opportunity. I want the best person to represent me, my community and values. My message is the same to everyone. Go out and meet these people, Shake their hand, ask a question, look them in the eye. Most people know, most of the time when they have someone they can support or not. It is not perfect, what it will be is that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach that tells you who you will support.
    This is our election, this is your decision, this is your job. You don’t have to tell anyone anything and the only person you need to impress is yourself.

  5. I have been ‘pounding the pavement’ for the past 2 weeks, canvassing for my local NDP candidate, and I find it alarming that so many people are undecided about which way they’re going to vote. I think it’s mainly because this campaign has dragged on far too long, and this is exactly why Harper dropped the writ so early. The campaign ads and promises from all sides have been relentless. People are confused. Those who were sure at the beginning are now having second thoughts. The push for strategic voting has only made matters worse, IMHO.

    Today is the first day we can vote in the advanced polls, and I’m heading over there right now. The bafflegab from Harper and Trudeau has not changed my resolve to make a REAL change in Canada this time. (Wish Ms. May could be on our team, though.)

  6. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but in my years of using advance polls to vote I’ve never encountered such delays as this time. There are not enough volunteers, there are too few tables and voting booths and the system is so slow and antiquated as to make it paralyzed. Why? And whose fault is it?

    Delays of 1-2 hours, which were unheard of, seem to be prevalent this year. A number of people at my polling area (South Surrey) left vowing to come back another time, or another day, but how many won’t come back knowing they face such delays? How many older people can stand in line so long?
